It seems that all anyone talks about these days is mold and mold problems. You hear a lot of people talking about the adverse health effects they or a loved one has experienced due to mold problems, and it seems to disrupt more and more peoples’ lives. Why is this? Well, there are a few reasons that mold seems to be having a renaissance.
First of all, the materials that people use to build today, including drywall and other things, are excellent mold food, because it is basically just powder held together with paper. Plus, mold sometimes grows on the other side of drywall where you can’t see it, allowing it to fester for long periods of time before being discovered – probably by bad health symptoms. Drywall also acts like a sponge, absorbing water due to it’s nature and retaining it for long periods of time. Anytime that drywall has been exposed to water for more than 24 hours, it’s almost guaranteed that there will be a mold growth problem in the future. In older times, they used plaster to build walls, which is much more mold resistant, though not completely anti mold.
In addition, our country recently experienced a boom in buildings. With so many construction opportunities, companies ended up cutting corners and completing construction projects that were a little less than stellar, because they wanted to get the job done quick and move on to the next one. Unfortunately this type of irresponsible behavior often leads to bad mold problems. The other side of this is that after the building boom, there were a whole bunch of foreclosures due to the Great Recession. Thus, a whole bunch of houses stood empty for quite a time in our Florida heat and humidity, with no AC or dehumidifying action, causing mold growth left to be discovered by new owners down the line.
