The worst type of mold to find in your home is known as Stachybotrys Chartarum. What?! That’s quite a mouthful. You pronounce it like this: stack-ee-boat-ris chart-are-um. It’s a complicated word that basically just means toxic mold. It is usually a greenish black color that gives it it’s more common, and much more easily pronounceable name: black mold. This is the kind of mold that you absolutely do not want in your house, and is one of the forms of toxic mold. Not all black colored molds are this type of mold, and not all strains of Stachybotrys Chartarum are completely toxic, though you don’t want to take your chances.
Unfortunately, this is the type of mold that often grows in standing water which means it could come after a flood or hurricane that has caused water damage to your house, or just after a leak that you didn’t know about for a long time. The problem with this type of mold is that it often produces mycotoxins which are the things that make you feel sick when you’ve been exposed to mold. When they are throwing off these toxins, the poisons live in the living and dead mold spores, and could even be present in things that have been contaminated with the mold.
Stachybotrys Chartarum is usually a wet slimy mold. When it is living, its spores are not airborne, but if it dries up then the spores can float away and create a mold problem somewhere else in your house. This type of mold create bad health symptoms like runny nose, coughing and feelings of fogginess in the brain. If the exposure is severe enough, there can also be more severe symptoms which may lead to death in some of the most extreme cases.
Don’t try to clean up a black colored mold yourself. You might just release the spores in the air which will expose you and your family to even more mycotoxins. Contact a professional like us here at iMold and we will be able to help you with your toxic mold problem.
