Mold loves buildings. There are many sneaky places where mold can find a happy home in a building and no type of building is exempt – that includes your home. How can you protect your home from mold? The State of Florida’s health website has some recommendations. They know all too well that in our South Florida community mold is a big problem. It’s nice to know that our state cares about mold problems. The state emphasizes a point that we agree with – the thing that causes mold is moisture – so keeping things dry and dehumidified is key when combatting mold growth.
One of their recommendations it pretty simple. They say to clean up spills within 24 hours, and dry them as well. Of course doing it even faster would be better, but 24 hours is the absolute max you should let any spills sit around. Along the same lines, they recommend that you dry out any building materials and rugs within 24 hours as well. This means you shouldn’t leave building materials out in the rain because they will be very hard to dry.
One important point the state makes is that it is also essential to use a dehumidifier or air conditioner to keep your home’s humidity in check. Humidity is one of the key factors that can cause mold growth without any spill or flooding, and we have plenty of it here in the Fort Myers area. Keep your dehumidifier at 50% because mold can grow in as little as 55% humidity.
If you follow these guidelines, you will be safer from mold, but there is no 100% mold free solution. If you think you have a mold issue, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We will come to your home and give you a free inspection to let you know if you have a mold problem and how we can fix it.
