There are many different types of mold that you might encounter in our hot and humid climate here in the Fort Myers area, but one that no one really thinks about much is surface mold, because we are all too busy worrying about the mold that is hiding in our walls and underneath our floors. You typically see surface mold on fold – so when that cheese goes bad, that is what could be happening to your furniture and floors! Mold starts by feeding on organic matter so when looking for surface matter you should check any leather sofas, shoes and even wooden floors. Even the dead skin cells you shed on your carpets can be a delicious meal for mold.
What are the types of things that could cause surface mold? They are really the same things that can cause that hidden mold that everyone worries about. To avoid surface mold, first of all, make sure that all humidistats are working in your home, including in your home appliances. Most air conditioners and central air systems have a humidistat. If it is broken or simply not functioning at peak condition then your home could become overly humid making it an ideal climate for mold.
Many mold remediators recommend getting a Wi-Fi enabled humidistat that you can control while you are away from your house to make sure that everything is going well. They also recommend making sure that your humidity is set to 50% on your humidistat because mold can find a happy growing place in as little at 55% humidity. Keep your HVAC systems clean, dry and functioning properly by draining them twice per year, and have a home security professional come check on your house at least every two weeks if you must leave it sitting empty for longer than 2 weeks – a lot can happen in just a few days when it comes to mold!
