Many people think of mold as that invisible threat that is growing inside of your walls. However, mold can grow just about anywhere, and some of the appliances in the home are prime growing environments for mold, meaning that it can get all over your clothes, your food and your dishes, which is not a good thing. In fact, the thought of that would make many peoples’ skin crawl with the creepies!
You can avoid getting your appliances filled with mold pretty easily. First of all, the washing machine is a prime place for mold to grow. It’s wet, sometimes warm, and people tend to leave their damp clothes – which are made of the natural fibers that mold thrives on – in the washer for long periods of time if they forget to take them out or simply don’t want to. So, wash your clothes and then take them out of the washer immediately. It’s a good idea to leave the door of your washer, and any drawers for soap, open so that they can air out while the machine is not in use. Make sure you use the detergent properly. Too much soap can also cause mold. This is especially important in high efficiency models because you will need to make sure the soap you use is meant for that model.
The same goes for dishwashers. Leaving dishes – which can get water stuck in them depending on their position due to the washing process – can be a growing environment for mold. The other problem with dishwashers is that there is food in them – the perfect nourishment for mold! Try rinsing most of the food matter off your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher if you’re not going to run it for a few days.
Other places for mold to grow include blenders and food processors. To avoid consuming mold, try washing after you use the appliances, but also rinsing before you are about to use them again. Microscopic mold particles can be in the process of growing and you don’t want to eat those – especially if you’ve already become sensitive to mold.
