The NADCA, or the National Air Duct Cleaners Association, doesn’t always talk about mold, they tend to focus more on air duct issues – except in the cases where mold is an air duct issue. They recognize that mold can easily grow in your ducts, and they have a classification system for levels of mold growing in ducts. They say that your air ducts aren’t usually looked at by anyone throughout the year, making them a prime growing spot for mold, especially in our hot and humid Florida climate.
They have three classifications for mold growth within ducts that your HVAC technician should pay attention to and will use to describe what type of mold problems you have, if any.
First of all, there is Condition 1. This is normal mold activity in your ducts. Mold and spores are pretty much always present, floating around and that is OK. It’s just when their presence becomes too concentrated and starts to affect someone’s health that mold becomes a problem. If you have Condition 1 mold, you will be OK.
Condition 2 is the next rung on the ladder. This is where it is good to catch mold, before it becomes a big problem. There are some spores which have settled on organic materials and maybe some initial growth. This can either be the start of a new mold problem, or a side growth that was spurred on by an existing mold problem somewhere in the house.
Condition 3 is when you have a big problem. This is active mold growth in the house. If you have Conditions 2 or 3 then you will want to call a mold remediator as soon as possible before your mold problems turn into home structure and health woes.
This is why it is a good idea to have your ducts examined and cleaned at least once a year. You may want to have them cleaned more depending on your habits, like if you are a smoker and if you have pets. If people in your home have health problems such as asthma, then it will be essential to get your ducts cleaned often.
