A lot of people get confused about the difference between mold and mildew.
One thing is for certain, that mold is a big problem that can compromise
your health, home and happiness. When you have mold, it will appear as a
dark spot on some type of organic material, or maybe you will notice a
musty smell. Mold starts from moisture that gets left in a location for too
long, because mold feeds on any type of organic material and water. Mold
grows especially well in our South West Florida area because our climate is
hot and humid, and we have plenty of storms that cause flooding – the prime
fuel for mold problems in homes. But what is mildew?
Mildew is actually another type of fungus that is very closely related to
mold. Mildew is usually whitish in color, and grows on any organic material
in the same conditions as mold. It is a common ailment that gardeners deal
with on certain plants. However, when you are talking about mildew in your
shower, you probably know that is not white. That is because the “mildew”
in your shower is not actually mildew, it is really mold. The mold that is
usually called mildew is typically mold that has a flat profile and grows
anywhere in the bathroom. It is sometimes black, grey or even red in color.
It should be noted that mildew (the actual type) has been known to cause
the same types of health problems as mold. If you have a garden and some of
your plants have mildew, you should not eat the vegetables or fruits, or
put the flowers inside of your house. To see if your garden has this
problem, look up pictures of what is known as powdery mildew or downy
mildew online. Those are the two most common varieties of this common
