You already know there are many things you can do to prevent that are more overarching tasks such as having a humidistat and keeping it around 50% humidity. But there are little things you can do every single day that will help to prevent mold from growing in your home. Just paying a bit of attention to these types of tasks will make mold less of a likelihood. Most of these involve keeping things clean and dry since mold loves water, and it also feeds on organic materials like food, wood or leather, or even your dead skin cells!
Kitchen: If your fridge has a “drip” pan, make sure to empty that regularly. Empty your garbage and recycling often, and if you have compost, it is best to keep it outside of the house. When your windows get condensation get it wiped up and dry as soon as you notice it, and open your windows a touch when you are cooking when it is on the cooler side outside – this will prevent condensation from even starting in the first place.
Outside of the home: Some experts recommend planting bushes one foot away from the house, and cleaning any mildew that you see on the house if you are taking on a repainting project. Keep your gutters and chimney clean and clear so that water can’t back up and stand around when there is a storm.
Bathroom: Open your windows when you are taking a bath or shower – especially on our most hot and humid days here in South Florida. Don’t let mold and mildew build up on shower doors, walls or curtains. It is better to clean it when you see it.
General home tips: Potting soil is a great place for mold to grow. It’s moist and full of organic materials. Thus, it’s a good idea to keep plants outside of your home. Make sure to inspect your attic and any crawlspaces regularly for mold. If you have crawl spaces with dirt floors then cover the floors with plastic. Don’t store things like wood and other organic building materials inside of the home.
