When you get your HVAC system serviced, your technicians should follow some clear steps to make sure to do a good job. First of all they will need to test your system to see if it is working properly beforehand. This will put your mind at ease. Then they will first clean your actual furnace and/or air conditioner depending on whether or not you just have one or the other. Of course any good HVAC technician will disconnect the power before starting to clean! Most technicians will use a special type of vacuum to clean the insides of your air conditioners and furnaces. They will then clean the cooling coils with a HEPA vacuum and coil cleaner, and clean the blower unit and decontaminate the inner surfaces in case there is anything gross growing there.
Next they will move inside your home and remove any of the registers, which you might think of as grate covers. They are the vent covers in your home. An HVAC technician should rinse off the registers and clean them with a solution. The next steps depend on what method your HVAC service person is using to clean your ducts. If they are using a negative pressure system, they will use foam to block any entrances to your system and then hook up their negative pressure machine. They will then use some kind of power brush to remove all of the dirt that was loosened by the negative pressure. If they are using contact cleaning, they will use a combination of brushes and vacuums to clean out the dirt.
Finally, your technician will usually treat your ducts with some kind of deodorizer and a sanitizer, to keep creepy things from growing in there. They will then re-install your registers and then your servicing will be complete!
