Around the turn of the century, as it flipped from ‘99 to ‘00, there weren’t very many mold removal companies according to some sources. Some speculate this is because not as much was known back then as is known now about the harmful effects of certain types of mold on health and happiness. As more research and experiential findings came out, people wanted the mold out of their houses and fast! Now there are about 10-20,000 mold removal companies nation wide.
Unfortunately, there aren’t any federal standards which tell us how much mold is needed to cause adverse reactions, but the mold industry is trying to set some internal standards. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICR) and OSHA have both created a mold remediation certificate. The industry is trying to come up with standards for what constitutes unhealthy mold exposure. Also, most states have a licensing process for mold remediators.
Mold has been a problem for a long while, and there are even references for how to deal with mold in the Bible. While there aren’t standards for how much mold is bad for your health, it’s safe to say that the less exposure you experience, the better.
