The Environmental Protection Agency is the governmental agency that
oversees anything having to do with the environment. They are often
involved in environmental safety and health hazards, and this includes
mold. On their website, they have provided a list of their top ten facts
and tips that people should know about mold. The information is definitely
stuff that we already know, but everyone should learn more about mold to
learn how to prevent it. Mold remediation services are wonderful because
they can help to rescue your home from mold and restore it to its former
glory, but it would be better to not have a mold problem in the first
First of all, the EPA says that the best way to prevent mold growth is to
control the moisture in your environment. They say to keep humidity between
30% and 60% in your house or building, though other mold experts say to
reduce your humidity to about 50% because it has been shown that mold can
grow at 55%. Decrease humidity by increasing ventilation in rooms with
moisture like the bathroom.
Of course moisture control is more than just humidity, though we do have
plenty of that here in South West Florida. You must clean and/or dry any
wet materials – especially organic materials like wood, fabric or leather
within 24-48 hours because that is the amount of time it takes mold to
grow. If it seems like such a short amount of time, it is. The other thing
the EPA suggests is that you do not install carpet under things like
drinking fountains, sinks or other water producing appliances because that
is practically just asking for mold. They also warn that mold can grow on
pretty much anything – so it’s important to be watchful.
